Since babies arrive with inborn temperaments and have not yet developed into specific approaches to life from adaptation, two psychiatrists set out to define basic traits that could be predictive of temperaments. They were very successful.

From the 1950s through the 1980s, two child psychiatrists, Thomas and Chess, identified nine temperament characteristics present at birth and that continued to be observable and real into adulthood through the New York Longitudinal Study. These nine traits were developed as a temperament scale for babies and young children and are predictive of a child?s interactive style. The nine traits are rated on a scale of one to five, and each trait will have a low level and a high level.

  1. Define temperament and discuss a baby’s temperament traits.
  2. Learn the nine traits and recognize how different children display the nine traits.
  3. Demonstrate how to give the nine traits assessment?
  4. Discuss how what you observed of the child and of the assessment can help a parent and coach.

Can an adult take the Nine Temperament Traits?? Why or Why Not?
